Tanzania Civic Space Monitor

CONTEXT

In October 2020 President John Pombe Magufuli was re-elected with the largest majority in Tanzania’s recent history, and opposition parties were almost completely eliminated from the political landscape. This marked the culmination of President Magufuli’s first term (2015-20), during which his government took major steps to reign in the free press, social media and rights-based advocacy. The Tanzania Civic Space Monitor (TCSM) focuses on civil society, the media, and the political opposition. TCSM 2020 is based on official documents, press reports and commentary, social media platforms, academic and civil society publications, global indexes and data from the Centre for Strategic Litigation’s election monitoring exercise that ran from August 2020 until the end of the year.
